From Script to painting, the N15 Enforcer

One of the future projects we have looked at undertaking at Digital Raven, is a reboot of our first collective project which was a Star Craft video.  Several months ago I set out to re-image the relatively short script, and tweak it into a series of web shorts.

Based on the fact that we are not focusing on Space Marines in full armor I had to come up with a weapon that would fit into normal unassisted human hands.  Using the Impaler as the base model and looking at some of my favorite “futuristic” looking guns I came up with the N15 Enforcer.

First let’s look at the C-14 Impaler, designed to be wielded by 9 foot tall power suits.. needless to say, I needed to come up with something that fit this style, but was smaller.

GuassRifle

So step one was to look at guns in a simplified form… in this case as silhouettes.  I also dragged in a P90 and a KRISS, as they are two of my more favored futuristic weapons.

Based on those I came up with this outline of the N-15 Enforcer…silsfinal

Here is the Enforcer with all the detail lines added.  silsdetails

In a lot of way the detailed line version is a pretty good guide, for a prop maker, to get a handle of how to put it together.  But often times it is a lot better to get the entire idea, coloration and details down before passing it on here is the value study of the Enforcer.

Here is the values color shifted a bit and a lot more the edging detail worked in.. details

Here is the final gun design with textures added.

Devrin Snakeslayer

One of the themes I return to quite often is the idea of a hidden world, and I don’t mean in some conspiracy theory sort of way, but in a secret lives of animals sort of way.  A few years ago I introduced several sketches of mice doing various things, most notably my four elements sketches which I am working on making into a set of four paintings.  But I have played with several other mice sketches.

DevrinSnake

A returning theme in these sketches is that there are two factions, the faction that the mice belong too, and the Grey Ones.  And that is as far as it goes 🙂

Enjoy

Bloodseeker, Old and New

Once there was a civilization that grew, their influence and Techno-Magic forging a vast empire.  The Gorn Empire left only massive pyramids, temples, and artifacts strewn across the North Western coast of what would become the Nightlands.

The Nightlands are forever shrouded in the darkness that creeps across the sky from an artifact known only as the Spire.  A giant structure that hangs from the clouds, like a massive inverted termite mound, made of dark iron plates, cursed blood quartz and twisted cold steel.  It is from here that six fallen heroes, known as the Shadow Lords, control their slowly expanding empire.

Bloodseeker is the 5th Shadow Lord, and the warlord that controls the undead-machine army of the Shadow Lords.  Here is the original sketch I did back in 2006.

As I continue to rework old art and sketches, here is the new Bloodseeker.

Bloodseeker and the Nightlands are part of my homebrew Pathfinder Universe, Galdor.

I Hunt the Dead

Years ago I created a character named Darken Visage.  He was a Hunter of the Dead, tracking down and dispatching vampires and other undead through a multiverse, that I never really figured out.  But it wasn’t uncommon for him to hunt down a vampire in 16th Century Italy on Monday, and then chase down a Lich on a Space Station orbiting Saturn on Tuesday.

Darken

He forever walks the line between cyberpunk street samurai and ancient wandering monk. This is one of the many character design piece I have done that I would like to take into a digital painting.

My Little Monsters: Cthulhu

Some of you might remember the MOAR Monster, it was an original acrylic on canvass painting that I worked on and release several months ago.  It was the first in a series that I have decided to call “My Little Monsters”.

Based on some of my personal feelings, that as I progressed through formal art schooling I lost touch with the “little kid” element and imagination of art and making creatures.  Replacing the void it left with technical skills and rules.  I will never be able to look at a piece of art I did as a kid and not see all the mistakes, but I can work on more creatures with an open mind!

Continuing with the more cartoony theme of MOAR Monster, here is the second sketch which I will soon begin to commit to canvass:

BabyCthulu

This time I decided to do a more traditional Victorian Horror monster and used HP Lovecrafts famous “Cthulhu” elder god as the basis, but sketched him as  a baby or hatch-ling.

I will continue to add creatures and monsters and aliens to the My Little Monster Series, I have even considered taking this a slightly more fun route and doing an traditional “A is for Alien” style set of 26 art pieces.  I hope you like this one, keep an eye out for more posts as I work on this one, and eventually the original canvass on sale at my ETSY store!

They Came as Three

Its been too long since I made a Sketch A Day post.  I have a new theme however, and what I have been doing recently is going through my old art works, and redoing the ones I want to update or redesign.

This is the first piece I decided to do, back when I was working on my BA in Illustration, we were given an assignment to take a series of one line chunks from a novel, and do a child/teenage level illustration that you might find in a book.  I did several thumbnail sketches, the image I chose will be the subject of a future post and is one of the illustrations I did that I wish to take forward and make into a digital painting.  This is just one of the thumbnails I decided I needed to work into a more finished piece.

Here is the original thumbnail:

As Three they Came Original Here is the reworked version, which I also am considering taking all the way to a finished painting.

As3theycameDecided to make it a bit darker, and hint more at what might be hidden beneath the robes.

Dragon Hunters, an old sketch…

Maybe a new digital painting!   This is another art piece I originally made to go along with my Home-brew DnD World Galdor.  I had considered making this the theoretical book cover.

dragonhunters

Here is a human dragon hunter, and his gnome artificer assistant.  Galdor mixes an early concept of American Old West style guns and magic to make its projectile weapons work.  In order for a human/gnome team to take down a dragon, they use a very wide bore single shot rifle.

I hope to turn this piece into a digital painting.

The Kor’Jorian Fleet, Character Design

A few weeks ago I posted a sketch of the Kor’Jorian, a race of microbial creatures that had melded with their bionic suits.  Here is are the sketches I worked up fro their fleet.

KorjorianDeathStalker

In the image above the top sketch was the old idea I had several years ago about how their  ships might look.  The lower sketch is an update made to reflect their bionic culture and mentalities.
KorjorianShipConcepts

Another early concept, and the thumbnail sketch that became the Silverslayer the Kor’jorian command cruiser. KorjorianSilverSlayer

A more detailed sketch of the Silverslayer…KorJorianWarshipConceptAnother quick concept that was never developed further.

All of these sketches and designs work into my Savaged Universe, and are examples of Character and Creature Design.
