The MOAR Monster…


An artist, an 18 month old, a sketch book, and a stack of crayons.  I was acting as a nanny to my roommates kiddo a few months back, and as an artist myself I liked to encourage him to take crayons to paper and go nuts.

We ended up doing a hybrid form of collaborative work.  I would sketch a line, he would scribble, only stopping to choose a new color and pointing to where he wanted me to place my next set of lines.  It was an exercise in showing him, how and where to color, but it became a freeing experience for me.  (As in not on the walls!)

As artists we lose a certain amount of boundless artistic freedom the more we attend any sort of formal training.  You always have a teacher or peer telling you how “that doesn’t work”, or “that is not atomically correct”, or my favorite “you have to learn the RULES before you can break the rules and be artistic.”

WE ARE MAKING ART, not doing brain surgery.  There isn’t supposed to be a “wrong” in artistic expression, it is a way of letting emotion and feeling leak from your soul into the world.  Going through formal training I spent a lot of time learning rules and concepts, and they have made me a better designer, a better painter, a better marketer, but not a better artist. Art School did more to teach me to lock away my creative urges in a cage of technical rules.

Sketching with a 18 month old, unlocked all that bullshit.  It helped me free up my talent,  and then let that talent flow through the techniques and tools, to become something awesome.  Our combined doodles led me to do this sketch, which I later applied to canvass.

The MOAR! Monster.  pretty simple idea, just a monster I might have sketched in 4th grade, on the corner of a  math homework assignment.  Going to an art school is a good idea, and experience, it is the teaching that needs to change.

Jay, one of the best and most influential artists and teachers I encountered while attending formal classes, He had this rule.  if you ever had to defend or come up with a reason for something in your art, just blame aliens.

“Why is this guy floating?  That isn’t physically possible and so it is just bad execution of this assignment…”  ..because it matter what the subject of the SHADING assignment is doing when the assignment was to shade a scene of the artist’s choosing. My physics professor, liked a lot of the odder sketches I did, because I kept a good concept of the PHYSICAL world in mind when I create Science Fiction and Fantasy Art.

When the physics teacher says “yeah if we could float it would look like that…”  the art teacher who didn’t take advanced science or math classes can STFU.  Anyway Jay’s rule: aliens, the dude can float cause of aliens.  Here is a teacher that attempted to unlock all those rules and let students do whatever.  However Jay was the One good teacher, we need more like him.

I am not alone in having creativity stifled by formal education.  Not because we are incapable of executing the given assignment to the fullest ability of the techniques taught; but because the professor, personally, would have chosen a different subject matter.  It would be like me teaching a class on color theory and telling a student her execution was bad because I, personal, don’t ever choose to paint puppy-dogs and sunshine.  Then turning to another student and telling her she did a good job because she painted Zero Suit Samus killing a metriod.  The Subject matter of the painting has NO impact on the use of COLOR!

The entire project was very freeing, and inspired me to continue with a series of “my little monsters”  trying to capture that cute and simple style kids sketch.  Everything I learned in 4 plus years of different art classes, and it takes an 18 month old to show me how to grow as an artist and painter.

Yeah education in America might be broken.

Teaching an old painting new tricks…


So a few years ago I started trying to paint an underwater scene, some of you might remember this…

We are just gonna do the TL;DR version here.  Don’t like it, wasn’t for me, needs to be finished/changed.

Being that Octopuses are one of my favorite animals, and that I wanted to play a lot with color and form I decided on a blue ring octopus as a subject.  In case you aren’t familiar with these guys, here are a few pics!

Here is my process on teaching this old canvass new tricks…

Here I have used sharpie to mark out where I want to octopus to be, and with that done I have laid in a lot of the background coloring.

Next I paint out the area that will be the octopus with white.  Paintings is about layering, and as the background is dark already, I don’t want to layer a light color like yellow, as my final painting will end up darker.  Here I am making sure that I get a nice solid, light yellow color2013-02-02_14-46-13_650

Creature and Character Development: The that Kor’Jorian


The Kor’Jorian are another race of Savaged.  Often modern authors play with the concept of man attempting to become God, and the repercussions of those actions.  From the “Terminator” movie series to Michael Crichton‘s Jurassic Park novels.  This concept is something that fascinates us; as our technology level increase it is a boundary that we flirt with on an almost daily basis.  From cloned sheep to the exponential advancement of computer processors, it is possible (in our minds) that at some point soon man might be able to create life.

This brings up a load of fears, will our creations become us?  Just as we have become gods in creating them?  Will they replace us, as we are seeming to replace our gods?  The Kor’Jorian address this fear in my science fiction world.  In a much different way, as these are not man’s mechanical monsters, nor are they purely mechanical constructs, but what has evolved from a biological creature merging with their technology.

The Jori were a hive race, made up of clusters of semi intelligent multiple cell organisms, each about the size of bacteria.  As the hive clusters grew in size their intelligence level increase exponentially, some of the larger hive groups (about the size of a basket ball) are considered hyper-intelligent.

Their hive clusters often splitting and merging with other clusters allowing an entire population to share the same experience or focus on the same tasks.  In their ancient past the Jori encountered another space faring race, and were forced to defend themselves.  As a race without conventional bodies,and were almost exterminated, before they created their mechanical bodies.  The Kor’Jori were born.

In the Eons since their race was forced to inhabit Mechanical bodies, the Jori have evolved  considerably.  Now longer are the clusters large, their science and technology advanced enough that smaller clusters and even single organisms have expanded their abilities through artificial means.  At times it is hard to distinguish whether there is a even a surviving biological component to some Kor’Jori.

The Kor’Joirans have ruthlessly protected their planets for Eons, forever paranoid that another race will try to subjugate or destroy them.  Often seen as warlike, unfeeling machines, they have little to no contact with other races, and often when they do it is violent in nature.

How I Kill myself with indecision


I have been working on my portfolio site for what seems like years… although it has only been a few months.  The idea is to have this stargate like device the floats in the midst of planets, the planets making up the “artsy” links for the different sections of my site.  This works out pretty well.  Using HTML5 and CSS3 I am able to get a quarter gate, in the bottom left corner, with planets positioned around it to look awesome!  In 1920 x 1080…

The problem is with a Liquid Layout as soon as it is re-sized… everything goes to shit.  Well not everything, using some CSS3 trickery I was able to back the background starscape and the gate itself re-size and maintain relative position, but the planets go all to hell and back.  An unfortunate reality that modern web-designers have to take into account is that most people still prefer to view a webpage at 1024 x 768, whether that is their default screen-size or they prefer to browse in windowed mode so their boss doesn’t catch them.

This leaves me with a few options… write something obscenely javascript heavy, that registers the user’s screen-size and spits back the page.  This also requires a lot of coding, as CSS has to be generated for each size detected.  Or I figure out a simple solution for now, and get to finishing.

What this really means is that I am gonna repaint the gate… as I am now centering the navigation page in a 1020px box, rather than having it adhere to the rules of a traditional liquid layout.   For those of you new to Worldcrafter, here is the original gate:

City 7, The Future and Ghost Stories


About two and a half years ago I began writing a screenplay.  Over the the next 8 months it was turned into the 14 minute long Action/Horror movie: City 7.

It was a blast to make, and takes place in the world I began writing in several years ago when I still owned and ran Ravenhorde Studios.  As we went into filming we planned to continue the story line with other short films, and web series releases.  I had written the majority of the story that followed another HAVOC.  However during filming we kept getting asked the same questions by our cast and crew, and the idea behind “Ghost Stories: The Package” was born.

Over the last 3 months I have written a new story arc and screenplay based on the same world.  This time we have a personal story, no longer focused on a team, but a single highly trained man, and his trials and tribulations in the wasteland that America has become.  The focus now is to reveal more of the setting of City 7, exposing bits of the world and getting into the uncomfortable questions of “who, when and why”.

With a finalized script, we are officially moving into pre-production.  Gears shift and I become a Producer and organizer.  Responsible for raising money, designing props, costumes, and figuring out make-up direction.  Peter, our Director, and I are also looking at filming locations and contacting the community to raise awareness about our project.  We have taken a different path this time, and will be making a 12 and 14 episodes web series.  Be sure to follow our progress on our Facebook page, as well as visiting out Indiegogo Campaign to look over our awesome perks.

The Entic, Creature and character Development


The Entic are another race that occupies the Universe of Savaged.  Original I had no idea what I wanted them to look like, or how they were going to function.  I wanted them to look as alien as possible, having as little comfortable similarities with humans as possible.  They are dangerous, driven and very enigmatic race.  This first sketch is really just a collection of ideas, which led to how they developed even further.   EnticEarlyConceptFiguring out the how and mechanics of how the Entic would move helped a lot in the final outcome of how they looked. Three fingered hands and feet, an insectiod like configuration, allowing them to move swiftly and efficiently.

 

I wanted these guys to be able to tackle a human, and wrap their fingers around a humans neck, and hold them down.  A terror tactic that works with their anatomy and savage society.  I have yet to really design their culture or worlds, or technology.  Entic

The Sage, Spacecraft Edition


It seems to be a heavy theme in my last few posts but here is some more stuff from the Savaged Universe!  As mentioned in my last post about concept design for the Sage, here are their ships.

I designed all the Sage ships around the basic idea of “UFOs” we have now days.  I may or may not have been watching Ancient Aliens when it occurred to me…

Since these guys have been cruising around the universe stealing and stock piling knowledge for years, I figured they were perfect suspects for the sightings we have had, and so I used that as a design base for their ships.

Traditionally Sage spacecraft are very light on weapon systems although since aligning with Humanity and the Jarn to run the Empire they have been forced to retrograde several of their century old ships, as well as redesign their new ships with weapons.

ARM Naval Weapons


More work on the Savaged Universe.  Still working on the political and governmental structure with the help of Freemind, but one of things I have figured out is most of the military structure.

The Imperial Navy is supported by the ARM Marine Corps.  Ships of the Imperial Naval line are patrolled and guarded by ARM Marines.  Most ships transport at least 3 full platoons for ship to ship combat and foothold actions(Planet side invasions) as well.

Lower ranked Naval Officers are often placed in charge of ARM Marine patrol and platoons, and so most are trained in and use ARM weapons.  Here are a couple quick sketches.

Both weapons are specifically designed to be used by unmodified Naval and Marine personnel, during ship boarding and ship defending actions.  The single fire Long Pistol fires a small full jacketed round, designed to cause massive damage to organic material only.  Capable of being used either full auto or semi-auto, weapons training normally stresses that officers and troopers fire only one round at a time.  The small size of the round was designed to not puncture the bulkheads and internal system of a spacecraft.

The Kinetic Force Stun Blaster was designed to be slung around in a few quick motions before discharging energy in a blast that was designed to stun or knock an opponent out.

On the Subject of Living worlds…


The last planet I worked on painting was somewhere in the primordial stage, some green sludge, some frozen or trapped water.  The next world I decided to work on was along the same lines just a little further developed.  More of an earth like planet, capable of hosting multicellular life, or even becoming a second home to humanity?

Once again I am much happier with this planet, the level of detail is much better and showcases my digital painting a bit better.
