From Script to painting, the N15 Enforcer


One of the future projects we have looked at undertaking at Digital Raven, is a reboot of our first collective project which was a Star Craft video.  Several months ago I set out to re-image the relatively short script, and tweak it into a series of web shorts.

Based on the fact that we are not focusing on Space Marines in full armor I had to come up with a weapon that would fit into normal unassisted human hands.  Using the Impaler as the base model and looking at some of my favorite “futuristic” looking guns I came up with the N15 Enforcer.

First let’s look at the C-14 Impaler, designed to be wielded by 9 foot tall power suits.. needless to say, I needed to come up with something that fit this style, but was smaller.

So step one was to look at guns in a simplified form… in this case as silhouettes.  I also dragged in a P90 and a KRISS, as they are two of my more favored futuristic weapons.

In a lot of way the detailed line version is a pretty good guide, for a prop maker, to get a handle of how to put it together.  But often times it is a lot better to get the entire idea, coloration and details down before passing it on here is the value study of the Enforcer.

Weapon Design…


As an avid reader of ImagineFX, and an artist that splits his attention between Sci-fi and Fantasy, I have seen a fair share of vehicle and weapon design articles.  In fact even a few character and creature design articles follow the same rules, often times a designer or artist will start with a silhouette.  In order to combine a few different weapons in order to come up with a new design I have decided to go with the silhouette method.

If you have been following my blog for awhile you may be familiar with my Illustrator tutorials, this is one of the case where Illustrator comes in handy.  In the future I will cover how to trace objects in Illustrator both by hand and with the Trace Tool.

Weapon Design silhouettes, TheGrav, Ryan BerryHere are the three weapons I have decided to attempt to combine.  Up top is the C-14 Impaler from Star Craft and Star Craft 2, this is the gun I need to stick close to as I design.   Next is the FN Herstal p-90, a weapon that has a long history with sci-fi television and movies.  Last is the KRISS, a pretty amazing and very new piece of weapons technology.

Both the P-90 and the KRISS are modern weapons with a very next generation or futuristic look, perfect for what I am going for.  Their is also a huge amount of resource material on each of these guns, so even when I do move forward into sculpting the master we will use to make all our props, I have a wealth of resources to fall back on.

I have begun to tear this apart look at the pieces I like, and combine them in ways I think the weapon will/should look.  As you can see I have also created a butt stock from scratch.  At this point you can still tell what weapon is what, but I have begun to merge the parts I like, and the original P-90 is pretty much gone.

There really are no rules on how to do this, so it is a lot of what looks good as you go.  Working on weapon silhouettes only helps to enforce this, as I have no distraction that will sidetrack me into the small details.

Here is my finished silhouette.  I have named the Enforcer, and come up with some random numbers.  To finish it I dragged in the barrel of the C-14 Impaler, cut out the middle support (it looked funny), and then worked the body around a bit more to get the styles to match.  I also did some tweaks to the top in order to set the design up for an optics system in the future.  My next step is going to be turning the silhouette into something I can paint.

I will do some more hard line work in Illustrator, drag it into Painter and finish it up so I can present it to the other guys working on the film.

Terran it Up, A reboot.


So 2-3 years ago I got a phone call from Peter, the other half of Digital Raven, and he asked “Hey mind being a Marine in a Star Craft Short Film?”.  Star Craft 2 was weeks away from release, and I had the Beta, so no sooner than he asked did I show up ready to be a badass.

This event, a day of filming in City7’s Assistant Director‘s garage, started to get the ball rolling on what would become Digital Raven.  As announced in one of our more recent Video Blogs we have decided to return to our roots and tackle a reboot.

As Peter mentions in the above video they were working on the very tight schedule for the contest.  Our pre-production schedule this time is a bit longer!  So we will be able to address a lot of our past issues, and deliver our vision in away that long time Star Craft fans will appreciate.

As we head into the realm of Science Fiction, we will be spending a lot more time on props and costuming, more so than we did with City7.  As the props designer, among other things :), one of my first jobs is to figure out what we need to be looking at in order to bring the world of Star Craft to life.

Just like a building, a good prop needs some  design and direction before you can even get into developing a physical version you can hold.  Arguably the biggest prop in the Star Craft Universe is the C-14 Impaler gauss rifle.  Everyone knows what it looks like, and who doesn’t want to have one of these just hanging around?

We aren’t looking at getting actors into full power suits though, as we are looking to keep the feel of the original Terran it Up! short film, here is where the design and planning stage comes in.  We have to make a smaller rifle…

In the original film, our Marines joke about how “budget cuts” from the federation have left them unarmored and under-gunned, so no powersuits and full rifles.  This is not a new concept to the Star Craft Universe.  Ghosts are an awesome example of a “light armored” unit, as well as way back in the Star Craft 1 days there was a cut scene that showed a group of marines, and a dude that was a marine, but not in a suit!

A bit of a blast from the past!  I mean those graphics were AWESOME!!! (Back in the day). Anyway, one of my first challenges is to take the C-14 Impaler, and get it to fit into the hands of someone who isn’t in-cased in 9 feet of power-armor.

Pretty steep order right?  Well not really… the great thing about Science Fiction, is normally it has some basis in fact.

Let’s first look at this awesome painting of a Gauss Rifle.  I will use this image as a point of reference as I move forward, a lot of the tool markings, manufacturing standards, and design elements will need to carry over into my design in order to keep continuity in the Star Craft Universe.  Its a bit like how the: AK-47, Scorpion and Dragonov sniper rifle all share many features helping them be identified as Cold War-Era Russian Weapons.

Now the aim here is to make a smaller weapon.  With this in mind I went to existing weapons in order to collect some ideas, so we end up with a new unique prop weapon, that could still thematically fit in with the Star Craft Universe.  Here are two images of Sub-machine guns I found that I want to use to shape this design.

Good things from Blizzard…


Just a few Blizzard videos!

Diablo III is probably one of my most look forward to games this year!  I also just got a beta key, so maybe soon I shall have a review!  Another anticipated game for me is Star Craft II :Heart of the Swarm.. Again Enjoy!

As a digital artist, these games and Blizzard as a whole has inspired me many times over the years!  I always look forward to there releases!
